About the Event
This play is based on and inspired by the group of highly trained women nicknamed the WRENS (Women’s Royal Naval Service) who operated the underwater submarine listening station on the Canadian Forces Base in Shelburne, Nova Scotia in the 1980's. They were listening for an elusive quarry: Russian Submarines. Their work was classified and they used the cover of “oceanographic operators.” These dedicated officers had the highest security clearance of any military women of the day. Unfortunately that did not protect them from the "purge" - Life shattering outings by the personnel they worked alongside. While the play delves into the history of the purge and is informed by this dark time in military history, the piece is set closer to the present day- in the window between the class action suit and the official apology. We follow the journey of one of these remarkable women as she finds the strength to join the class action suit in an attempt to heal her relationships with her country, her comrades, her loved ones and ultimately herself.
