Other Women Theatre Collective presents “Tidal Women….Braving the Storm: Songs and Stories of Women and the Sea”
Voyage with Tidal Women, a theatre performance with music, poetry and memoir of three women from very different times and places, who made a life by the sea.
A collaborative production by Laurel Darnell, Sue Evans and Cynthia Myers.
Darnell, Evans and Myers portray female characters of local and historical interest who lived an isolated life near the sea in different times and places. Three strong narratives intertwine and explore the lives of women who express their fears, frustrations and joys through writing.
Laurel Darnell, a producer and performer from Indian Point, NS, plays Evelyn Richardson, a lighthouse keeper on the South Shore, using text from Richardson’s memoir, “We Keep a Light”.
Sue Evans, an actor from the UK now living in Chester, was intrigued by the stories of women who disguised themselves as men to assume roles that would otherwise have been denied them. She plays both a mother and a daughter, Ruby and Nan, from Laurie Graham’s book “The Liar’s Daughter”, a story that adds dimension to a long held assumption that the only women aboard ships in the early 19th century were officers’ wives or prostitutes.
Cynthia Myers, a professional actor and jazz singer explors the life of Lady Anne Grenfell. Anne MacClanahan left Chicago society life to marry Sir Wilfred Grenfell whose mission brought education and medical stability to people living in the outposts of Newfoundland. Cynthia’s portrayal uses text from MacClanahan’s book The Annals of Le Petit Nord, written in the form of letters to a friend.
Enjoy an evening of music, poetry and memoir of women from different eras, with a decidedly salty atmosphere.
