World Premier at The Osprey Arts Centre: Live Musical Theatre
SING, DANCE & CELEBRATE WITH THE BREATHTAKING NEW MUSICAL

New Beginnings Ministries (Dartmouth) has teamed up with Broadway In The HOOD (Las Vegas) to bring to life a wonderful new intimate musical about the unlikely pairing of two Americans from two different worlds whose lives helped pave the way for racial harmony in Canada in the 1800’s.  “Descendants: A Musical History Lesson” is proud to make its world premier November 2017, with a limited engagement tour of selected provinces in Canada, beginning at the Osprey Arts Centre.

Descendants: A Musical History Lesson, by the authors Deidre Thompson and Torrey Russell, is a haunting rags-to-riches tragedy depicting the fictitious tale of Edmund Fanning and David Sheppard, told through the eyes of George “Buddy” Sheppard, an 80-year-old descendant of David Sheppard.

Fanning, a white Loyalist, after being forced out of North Carolina, finds himself escaping a lynching as he flees to New York City only to stumble right in the path of the Underground Railroad. Edmund along the way encounters David Sheppard, a runaway slave, who ultimately ends up saving Fanning’s life as they both escape to New York City. As the years pass David and Edmund form an unlikely friendship, but slavery remained consistent. From New York to Nova Scotia skin colour remained the boundary that kept these two worlds apart.

The remarkable creative team have brought together some of the top names in the world of theatre and dance to bring this show to life. “Descendants” will star none other than dance extraordinaire Justin Bryant, former principal dancer with The Philadanco Dance Company and most recently the Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE in Las Vegas at The Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino as David Sheppard, and a cast comprised of artists from both the United States and Canada.

The rousing musical score is comprised of everything from Bluegrass to Gospel and features special songs by award winning Canadian recording artist Cheryl Edgett. With stunning choreography by accomplished dance masters Avree Walker and Justin Bryant, and direction by Torrey Russell, “Descendants: A Musical History Lesson” is a beautiful song and dance masterpiece that transports the audience from the 1700s to present day woven together to create a beautiful tapestry that explores universal issues, which affect us all – love, anger, friendship, forgiveness, faith, maturity, and bloodlines.
